Notes from the East | ||
November 2024 Brethren, My father used to always say to me: "The older you get, the less time you have." As a child, I always took it to mean how much life you have left to live. Now, I believe it has more to do with how busy life gets and the feeling that you never seem to catch up with all that you want to do. Certainly, as a mason, there is no shortage of worthy events, meetings, gatherings, etc. that you can attend daily. I often wonder how masons of old handled all their masonic responsibilities, along with family, work, and dare I say, any projects or hobbies they had. For one thing, they did not have cell phones, which seem to make us all feel like we should be "connected" all the time. My ascent to the East started as a Tyler in 2014, working my way up through the chairs until being elected as Worshipful Master in January 2024. At each step, I was unsure if I was ready for the next step, but feeling the call to learn more and see where my journey took me. Each chair has its nuances, and in this Lodge, there is never a shortage of exceptional Masons willing to assist and support you. As I write in my Notes from the East, Masonry teaches and educates as you progress, and learning the ritual well enough to perform degrees causes you to look deeper into the meaning. It never ceases to amaze me that our ritual is still as relevant today as it was then. Suffice to say my journey has been rewarding and I continually look forward to further forming that perfect ashlar! This past year has been one of the most trying and turbulent for me as I have experienced personal injuries, work stressors, and the loss of my father as well as severe health issues for my mother, for whom I am now the primary health care decision maker. For these reasons, I need to focus additional time on non-Masonic activities. The decision to not seek another year in the East was not made lightly, but each person must recognize their own limitations. Horace Chase Lodge has Brethren who, without hesitation, are up to the challenge of the East as well as Brethren who will support them moving forward. Being able to represent this storied Lodge as its Worshipful Master is an honor, and hopefully I have and will continue to reflect honor on our venerable institution. Although a few months ahead, I encourage you to attend the ascension of the next Worshipful Master of Horace Chase Lodge on January 26 at 2 pm. With each new Master, come different approaches of how best to engage and communicate with you. Each Master also needs to know what is important to you, as they navigate how best to convey, engage, and energize you. The journey continues for each one of us and Masonry. My journey in Masonry will continue, and I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportu- nity to have served this Lodge in the past, in the present, and into the future. Brethren, let me know how to make Masonry a constant in your life. The Lodge and its Officers hope to see and hear from you soon. Stop by a Night of Masonic Light or travel to another Lodge; make Masonry a positive outlet for you. Please check the Horace Chase calendar for upcoming events and reach out if we can assist you. Stay safe and well. Fraternally, Scott Nichols Worshipful Master |
